Group 4- Food In Social Media


    The following link leads one to explore the twitter and Facebook pages of the Food Network. By using social media, the Food Network can target multiple audiences at once. On the twitter and Facebook page you can find links to recipes of the day, information about different chefs, and many different cooking tips. Many different interviews and commentary on the twitter and Facebook page can lead one to achieve a quicker cooking experience by having the information on the twitter web page or one’s IPhone or Android rather than having to view the actual T.V. show taking hours of their time.

  1. The food network is using social media to attract their audience by using the social media as another source of delivery. Instead of just using television, the food network can directly affect the personal lives of the audience because social networking sites are types of media that a lot of people use on a regular basis. It's easier for most people to use Facebook or Twitter because they are mobile. Some people don't always have the availability to just sit and watch TV anymore and the food network realizes that.

    The Food Network's Facebook page accommodated this urge for mobility by separating its pictures in different albums. This organization makes it easier for audience members who are looking for a specific recipe/idea.

  2. The food network uses social media to attract their audience because social media is absolutely everywhere from your computer, to your phone, IPad, or Kendel. These social medias are a fast source of delivery, just like Myia stated. Take the example of the T.V., there is commercial after commercial and people want their information fast and to the point. On Twitter and Facebook that information is page by page, directions, pictures, information all in front of your face. People can click on what subject of information they want to view and ignore the rest, unlike with T.V., people have to sit and wait for the commercial to be over just to finish the rest of their show. The food network relates to their audience by making it easier for their audience to prepare the dish, like the "Bunny Cake", which looks good and easy to make for a holiday treat. People during the holidays don't want to take there time on making a dish that is complicated and the food network relates to them and makes it easier for their audience to put together something that is easy but also looks appetizing at the same. The pictures of the star finalist would make a viewer or follower look them up on Twitter, Facebook, or television because the audience might want to see how that man or woman cooks, how easy they prepare their food and how much time they spend cooking an easy or complicated treat/meal. Also, people on Facebook and Twitter seek out other attractive people and if the audience likes their picture then they will go and seek out more information about that one recipe for instance by the person who prepared it and read more information about their character and their interest.

  3. Social media is everywhere. Now a days people are on their iPhones, iPads, and laptops constantly. The food network has decided to work with the trend of social media by making their food recipes and pictures available at the touch of a finger. The food network is attracting the type of audience that is on the go, doesn’t have time to sit in front of the TV, and typically mothers who are looking for quick recipes to feed their impatient children when it comes to food. Furthermore, there is a similarity with respect to the social media and the easy recipes. Surfing the Internet for the food network’s Facebook page or twitter account is fast and easy with people’s iPhones. Similarly, the recipes advertised on the food network’s Facebook page are quick and easy recipes to make. The concept of getting information and making food quickly and easily is what attracts the modern day audience who live in a fast pace world.

  4. The food network is using social media to target an audience that is more technology prone. Now a days, people rely heavily on gadgets because one's life is far too busy to take the time to sit down and watch a show. With a smart phone, anyone can take it on the go and multitask at the same time. Working parents do not usually have the time to make a full course meal, but rather need a quick fix recipe they can whip up in no time at all.
    It is easier to use Facebook if you are looking for a specific recipe, and the pictures supplied are mouth watering, convincing the audience to try that recipe for themselves.

  6. When I opened the webpage to the facebook page, there were two browsers opened for facebook. Using facebook allows an audience that may be addicted to the website to easily see some advertisements. Also, there may be a very specific target audience for each of the food advertisements. With the ability to "like" a webpage, advertisements are set up on a specific person's facebook page that allows them to see advertisements that might be close to personal. Since many people browse social media, it would be easy to just browse food network from social media. This is more convenient than turning on the T.V. and may even fall into the browsing habit of many social media users.

    1. You bring up a lot of interesting parts in your discussion Vytas. I agree with you on the ideas on why Facebook was used to target its audience. I also liked how you explained the ability of how the viewers could also "like" the page. That being said, I also noticed that when I first visited the website, all I noticed were different pictures of food. Each picture came with a variety of different people giving their opinions and of course the "likes". I thought it was interesting how the Food Network changed its ideas on how to reach its audience and then adapted to a different method of using Facebook. This is of course key when it come to our society where social networking has dominated.

  7. Due to the increase in technology in our society, it's safe to say that companies and TV shows are using it to their advantage. Considering most people have a Facebook or Twitter and tend to be on them several times a day, it's smart that the Food Network took advantage of the opportunity to attract viewers through social media websites. Viewing the Food Network's page on a social media website tends to be so much more convenient than actually sitting down for thirty minutes to watch a whole show. Online you are given the freedom to browse through recipes that appeal to you whereas on the show you are stuck watching whatever they are making. So overall social media websites are useful sources for companies to advertise and for people to easily access recipes.

  8. The decision to create a Facebook and twitter page by the Food Network allows them to further reach out to audience. The world has increased and now lives a much faster paced lifestyle; one in which everything is on our phones or computers rather than sitting and watching television for an hour and then furthermore taking time to write down the recipe that was made on the show and gather all the ingredients then come back and cook. It is much easier for people in today's world to view a recipe on twitter or Facebook with their cell phone and then pull it up on their way home and stop at the super market and gather all the ingredients right then and there. This takes an hour plus out of the process that it would have to watch the television show and then go to the store and buy the things needed to make the meal. Having a twitter and Facebook also allows the viewers to go back t older recipes much easier and finding a variety of recipes so that they can then choose what they want to cook out of a multitude of options. With only the television series, the viewer was only subject to what was on at that time and had no way of looking back at other options for that day. This allows the Food Network to reach out to a much broader audience and make themselves more appealing to attract more followers, and even advertisers trying to reach those followers.

  9. As everyone knows, when things put on the Social media, the things will to be well-known. The food network is using social media not only to advertise about different chefs, but also link to recipes of the day, which give people the most convenient way to access the information they need. The food network has only appeared on the TV, with the limited time and limited recipes for audience. It is not easy for the people, especially the people who go home late after all day work. Only thing they need is a fast but healthy food. With the online food network, cooking becomes much easier for them. Creating the twitter and Facebook pages of the Food Network allows them to satisfy more audience in the world. Unlike the TV show, the Internet connect the world, the people from the most place of the world can share their cooking experience together which reach a higher level for this online food network.

  10. Food Network is using social media to attract a wider audience than it could solely with its cable channel. The Food Network seems to use the internet to not only advertise but to expand the network beyond what is possible through television. They have posted photos, recipes, more information about Food Network personalities, and more and more ways for viewers to interact with their favorite Food Network chefs. An example of this is the #WhatsCooking that can be found on the twitter page. This is a place for regular people and professionals to talk about what they’re cooking and to share recipes with others. I would much rather go through their Facebook or Twitter than watch a show because it’s more accessible. I can browse through hundreds of recipes to find the one I want rather than hope I find a good recipe on television.

  11. In todays society internet rules. To reach out to more people and to a broader audience Food Network like many other shows and buisness' are connecting through social networking. This approach is able to gain more attention from viewers at anytime. Alot of people have these social networking sites directly on their cell phones. If Food Network can gain the viewers attention through these sites they can possibly gain a larger audience for their shows. These social network sites are not an attempt to have viewers choose between the web sites or watch the shows and which one is better, but to use the web site to get more people to watch the shows.

  12. Social media is a very inexpensive way for The Food Network to advertise and it allows them to reach a huge audience. It also allows people to spread the word on a show or recipe simply by posting it to their own wall or tweeting it out to all of their followers. By using social media people can share information about The Food Network from anywhere. People have the ability to share their opinions and spread the word about The Food Network very easily making it relatable to their Facebook friends or Twitter followers. Seeing pictures on a social media site can spark a person's interest enough for them to watch the show.

Almost every person in today's society that has access to a computer or any other means of portable internet most likely has a social network of some sort. Whether it is facebook, twitter, instagram, or any form of a blogging website, most people have one of them or a combination of them. Technology is a huge way of communicating information to people. Advertising companies have definitely grasped onto this fact as well. If someone sees pictures or watches videos about the food network, they may be more inclined to watch the show or view the show's websites or magazines. Facebook has many different ways for one to communicate what they found interesting on a page such as the food network. They can either simply "like" the page, comment the page, or share the page to their own wall so that others can now have access to it. Social networking is evolving into a huge means of self advertising with out even one realizing it.

  14. The Food Network is a very popular channel on television so it tries to expand to different viewers. Facebook is the most popular social network so food network takes advantage of this to expand their audience. Social media makes communicating easy. With people checking their facebooks regularly, they are able to view updates and notifications from the food network, so no longer do people have to turn on the television for the food network to reach their audience, food network can reach them directly through facebook. Personally, I think its easier to view food network on facebook because I constantly have facebook up on my phone or laptop whereas a tv is hard to acquire. The way food network functions is by connecting to the audience. Most of the shows demonstrate a chef working in the comforts of his own kitchen at home. The pictures on facebook either look funny or have delicious food, making the audience want to watch the show. By seeing how easy it may be to cook the food this can lead someone to want to cook and become an avid watcher of the food network.

  15. The Food Network on facebook and twitter is a good way to inform their audience of new programming and attract new viewers as well. The network makes their food look as attractive as possible and no doubt attracts many views, maybe in hopes that people on the internet will become interested enough to visit their website for the recipes or tune on television. It's also more realistic for the audience to even see the show on tv, and then look it up afterwards. It's easier to read directions off of the computer or print them out than try to keep up with the mostly 30 min. television programming during cooking, therefore The Food Network having facebook and twitter is quite useful as well.

  16. Honestly, I find it easier and more entertaining to watch The Food Network on television, but I'm not most people. I think it was a very intelligent move on the Food Network's part to make the program more accessible to the viewer's by putting it on Facebook and Twitter. Putting it on Facebook and Twitter is also a great way to attract more viewers, as well as different types of viewers, to the television network. Like I said, I think the television shows are more informative, but I agree that it is easier to find it online, since most people have smartphones these days. It's also easier to stay up to date on your favorite Food Network shows and find out what else is happening in the food world.
