Group 2 Post - Dorito's

In a 2011 Super Bowl commercial, Dorito’s created an advertisement in which three men were sitting on their couch doing nothing one night when one of them decided to open a bag of Dorito’s.  When the bag of Dorito’s is opened, one guy eats one chip and a very attractive girl appears out of thin air next to him on the couch.  The other guy follows the first’s decision and eats a chip, once again, an attractive girl appears out of thin air.  The final man, who was solving a Rubik’s Cube and was the least attractive of the three, takes the bag and pours the entire bag of Dorito’s in his mouth.  A multitude of attractive women once again appear out of nowhere and are fawning over him.  By the end of the commercial the entire bag is poured out and there are numerous girls, all attractive surrounding the three guys and filling the entire room.

  1. This ad uses sex appeal by introducing a number of attractive, fit women in shorts and tight tank tops to attract males. This was chosen to play during the Super Bowl because the majority of the people watching the super bowl are males, so they would definitely keep watching the commercial. The males were the main characters in the commercial and the females were used more for bait than anything. The women didn't have any important lines in the ad. The guys were not very attractive so I think the producers were looking for that. The women were cute and attractive so they could attract the male audience. Doritos made their money back from airing the commercial because so many people, especially males, were watching at the time. After seeing the ad, they were probably thinking that if those ugly guys could have such cute girls they could too. It also made the Doritos name more known and popular. This ad shows how society uses women as more of an object and sex appeal.

    1. I agree with almost everything you have said in your paragraph. Sex appeal certainly is the primary method that this advertisement used. The purpose of using three average guys playing video games was simply of way of making it easier for the guys in the audience to relate. The idea that any guy could just open a bag of Doritos and then suddenly be bombarded by women may be just enough for men to go out and buy some. I wouldn't however say that the advertisement demonstrates how women are used more as objects. Its just a mater of keeping the audiences attention; men are more likely to watch a commercial if there are attractive women involved. That being said, sex appeal has definitely become a major part of the advertising business. Men will always chase after attractive women, regardless of the situation.

  2. This commercial is persuading men in particular. It uses the sex appeal of women to attract guys to want an eat Dorito’s. The attractiveness of women catches a man’s eye and makes them pay attention to the commercial. The Super Bowl is a major deal in America. The the majority of Americans watch the big game and therefore is the best time to advertise. Although a lot of people enjoy football, men usually play it and in turn watch it. This is the perfect time to show a commercial that targets men and plays with the idea that if they eat some Dorito’s they will have a fun time, similar to the men in the advertisement. The effort to find certain women was probably extensive, not only did they have to find attractive women. They had to find women that were attractive to a wide audience not just to three certain men. The ad portrays society as being weak. It makes it look as if a women can change a man's mind and that they have "power" to make things better.

  3. A prevalent message in the commercial is that opening a bag of Doritos can change the atmosphere in a room. The men are sitting around playing video games and solving a Rubik’s cube, which does not conjure up the thought of fun. When the man opens the bag of chips and they each eat some, women appear and make the atmosphere more enjoyable and entertaining. The commercial is pushing the idea that if consumers buy the chips, then they will have a good time and can relieve their stress. Furthermore, the women in the commercial definitely appeal to the men who are watching the Super Bowl. It was smart for the company to use attractive women because during commercial breaks throughout the Super Bowl, people typically get up and refill on snacks and refreshments. The women in the commercial would catch the men’s eyes and make them watch and remember the commercial. In turn, men will remember the product and be more likely to go out and buy Doritos Chips.

    1. The atmosphere was changed in the commercial but another aspect that seemed to sell Doritos was the fact that Doritos seemed to fix problems. In the commercial, the men are disappointed that it was "another boy's night in". Once the Doritos was opened, that was no longer the case. While stress was relieved, the main point seemed to be that Doritos can fix situations. Another point is that one of the comments was "im on my fourth bag. ITS NOT WORKING!!!!!!!!!!" with 109 likes. It seems like there were many people that caught on to the idea of Doritos creating attractive girls.

  4. Sex is used to sell in showing many attractive women fawn over typically "geeky" type men. This commercial was chosen to play to catch the eye of the male audience watching the Superbowl with the women in the commercial. I don't think there is much importance to the male/female dynamic as Doritos makes it pretty clear that it's a standard "sex sells" commercial. Doritos is convincing the male audience in a fictional way that opening and eating Doritos will bring attractive women to one's beck and call. I don't think much effort was put into casting each of the characters so long as the actors fit the "nerdy male/attractive female" bid. Effort didn't need to be put into casting because as long as the looks of the actors fit, the commercial will work with the intent Doritos wanted it to. To Doritos, it obviously was worth paying that much money to get the commercial to air. In my opinion, it might have been worth it because Superbowl commercials are more about the shock value than anything. Controversial commercials get the media's blood boiling, and many women's activists groups could have been upset about the depiction of women in the commercial. The story would make the news and it'd only be more press for Doritos, which correlates to the saying "All press is good press." The ad tries telling the viewers that the nerdy men can only get the attractive women if in a fantasy way like this, all thanks to Doritos, which to the audience, will hopefully affect their chip-buying habits.

  5. Specifically chosen to run during the Super Bowl, the ad targets a male audience in that it uses sex appeal and the stereotypical image of males playing video games. Doritos uses beautiful girls as a way to sell their chips. Once one eats Doritos, beautiful women appear. It almost degrades women to portray them as sex objects instead of real people. There is no evidence to support how Doritos will bring girls. Doritos uses nerdy looking guys to show that with the bite of a chip even their biggest fantasy can become real. The ad seemingly only attracts a male audience, which makes sense because primarily males are watching the Super Bowl. Males were shown having all the power and women as "Your wish is my command" I believe little effort was put into this commercial, however not much was needed because it was entertaining and memorable. Males in our society today are attracted to beautiful women being shown in a sexual manner, that itself is convincing enough to buy the chips. It was a numerous commercial that was effective.

  6. The fact that this ad was constructed specifically for a Super Bowl audience really effects the overall feel of the commercial. Sex is obviously used to sell the product in this commercial, as attractive women are a center point in the video. Common knowledge available even before scientific studies has always suggested that men are more universally attracted to sex appeal than women. The ad also focuses mainly on the males as characters with whom the audience can relate with. The actual product itself, Doritos, is something that most people would likely expect a man to eat over a woman. All of these observances suggest that the ad is targeting mostly men and perhaps women who think and behave like men, both of which are the primary audience that one would expect the Super Bowl to attract. also the men are sitting on the couch enjoying snacks in the ad, which is exactly what the majority of the Super Bowls audience would be doing at the time the commercial was aired. These factors all seem to suggest that this ad was created to appeal to the exact audience that the Super Bowl does, maximizing its effectiveness during the event, which would also maximize the profitability of this very expensive airtime.

  7. It is a good idea that combines the Doritos and hot girl together. This ad uses the hot girls to attract guys to want an eat Doritos. I believe the top three things for most of the guys are hot girls, food, and games. Although this is a snack commercial, guys can watch their favorite thing from it, even enjoy on it. Meanwhile, this ad is still fun for girls because they have chance to laugh at guys as always. But don’t forget, this turning point of this ad is the time this guy eats one chip which emphasis the main idea of the ad – eating Doritos brings you the good feeling as the hot girl stay with you. The commercial was playing during the Super Bowl is a smart idea because Doritos precisely meet the needs of people—eating when they watching Super Bowl, no one wants to sit in front of the super bowl without any snacks to eat. In this ad, male is a kind of beneficiary group, and the female is the reason why the male benefit from. For sure it was worth paying that much money to get this commercial to air during the Super Bowl. I believe the most important opportunity for a commercial is whether the commercial published at a good time which determined how many people will watch it. The time during the Super Bowl is perfect for a commercial that will show most of American, and bring to the company much more benefit than they cost before.

  8. This ad uses sex appeal by incorporating multiple different beautiful women that are instantly attracted to which ever male ate the chip. It gave the idea that even the ugliest of man can attract a knockout woman by simple eating a dorito's chip. With the sex appeal, the target audience is also men. The amount of beautiful women far outnumber the only three men in their 20's that are neither attractive nor in shape. Along with the target audience, one of the most watched sports programs in America is the super bowl, with the mass majority of viewers being primarily male. The male and female roles in the commercial where incredibly important to the overall success. All three males where unattractive, un-athletic, nerdy individuals while every woman was beautiful, tall, in great shape and out of each of the males leagues. It was most likely worth the large sum of money to broadcast this commercial because of how large the target audience is. Each commercial isn't just shown once during the Super Bowl and forgotten, these commercials are thrown on youtube and watched over and over. Not only is it such a large audience all in one shot, but a good deal of Super Bowl viewers will tune in just to catch the commercials. The says that in our society you can have your cake and eat it too. That means that you can be out of shape, unattractive and lazy but you can still have hot women without changing a thing about yourself.

  9. Although this ad was clearly chosen to play during the Super Bowl because men are the target audience, the fact that they use such stereotypical role models makes it interesting to both genders. While men watch the super bowl to see football most woman who watch the super bowl are watching the commercials. Advertisers are aware of this and put a lot of thought into how it will be perceived. The fact that the men in the commercial are no way athletic and the woman they end up with could be considered dream woman, is so unlikely that the viewers are amused. Male viewers see men like themselves, couch potatoes who are playing video games while eating Doritos, and will remember the commercial and possibly buy Doritos the next time they are choosing snack chips. Female viewers see their husbands in the commercial and know it will never happen but laugh because they know that is their husbands "fantasy". Woman are associating Doritos with something positive and will remember this when they go to buy chips. This is a commercial that people will remember and talk about. The day after the Super Bowl talk shows will rehash their favorite commercials and this commercial will continued to get play. Doritos had to spend two and a half million dollars for the commercial to be aired during the Super Bowl; however because it is not only funny but also controversial they are going to get free advertisement which will generate Doritos sales making it worth the cost.

  10. The ad was strategically used as a superbowl ad to appeal to a predominantly male audience. The ad uses sex appeal to gain the attention of men. The men in the commercial are purposely out of shape and/or doing things society wouldn't consider to be very attractive to the girls that appear later in the commercial. The only thing these average joes needed to turn around their fate of "another boys night in" is to pop in a Doritos chip. Instantly Doritos transforms their night in to one of their wild fantasies. Overall doritos and many other major companies know that sex sells. To spend mass amounts of money on this commercial for the superbowl makes perfect sense, Doritos knows the audience and targets them with what is a known selling point, sex.

  11. This commercial uses sex appeal by inuding a large variety of very attractive females in their commercial. This would generally indicate that this commercial was meant for a male adience. This particular Doritos commercial was probably chosen to play at the Super Bowl commercial because football is generally considered a "man's sport". As a maker of commercial's one would try and gear their commercial's to the largest audience base that they can, which means sex appeal. The importance of the male and female roles in this commercial is to make the defining features of the commercial, and to make sure that the message of the commercial get's across. For the male character's the time was put into make sure that the character's were defined as "nerds" or "geeks". Somone who society generally feels would not be able to attact a female of that particular caliber. They are overweight and dorky looking, they are also playing video games and solving rubix cubes, another nerd defining aspect. The women were obviousy casted for their looks as well. The American culture has preconcieved notions of what is considered attractive on a female, and the choice of women for this commercial fit the bill perfectly. It was worth paying the exteremely large amounts of money for this commercial to be played in the Super Bowl because it gained a large fan base, and it managed to get consumers to relate back to their commercial when they are thinking about what chip they want to buy. The ad clearly states that two messages, that nerdy guys usually don't get a chance with attractive females, what America percieves as what qualities an attractive female should have, and that by consuming Doritos, a person will have a better exprience than if they had chosen another brand of chip.

  12. This commercial uses sex to gain the audience’s attention like most things on TV. I agree that it makes sense to use sex appeal for the majority male audience but I feel that there’s a disconnection. A lot of males do watch the Super Bowl but women and younger kids do as well. The commercial seems to target one specific audience instead of all viewers. The purpose of the males in the commercial is to mimic what the males in the audience are doing as they physically watch this commercial, sitting on the couch. By having the males doing a common thing like sitting on the couch, a common ground is established. The male casting did reach out to various male personalities such as a good-looking guy and a gamer. There were also various women appearances too. This ad just furthers the gender biases in society today. A simple action like eating a chip made a woman appear. This ad shows the issue of power dominance because the men had the control of making the women appear.

    1. I agree with establishing a common ground. The males watching the commercial are usually sitting on a couch waiting for the game to return, just like the males in the ad. The ad is not gender bias either, appealing to a variety type of people, like you said, the gamer, attractive guy, and the smart one. The women in the commercial were also different races making the commercial appeal to more people watching the Super Bowl. Women in this ad were used as more of objects. Women appeared because of eating Doritos. They were very attractive and used to keep the attention of the male audience. I believe Doritos made their moneys worth with this commercial, because it uses comedy and sex appeal to attractive a large number of people. Being such a popular commercial, people are less hesitant to grab a bag of Doritos when choosing between them and another non-household name.

  14. Throughout this commercial, sex appeal is used to sell the product of Doritos targeted directly to men. Women are presented is short shorts and tight tank tops and even some in bath towels. By presenting the women in little clothing, the company is truly using sex to sell. This commercial was played during the super bowl as another advertising technique. Not only are men normally the sex viewing the football game, but the super bowl is one of the most watched televised programs. It was definitely worth spending the money so that the commercial can be viewed by a large audience. Sometimes people even watch the super bowl just to view the commercials. I believe that the role very different males and females were very prominent in this commercial. Doritos presented many different ethnic groups and types of individuals to appeal to multiple audiences. I think this commercial portrays society as a population attracted to sex appeal, which successfully targets viewers to purchase Doritos saying that they can change your boring life into one filled with attractive women.

  16. This advertisement uses attractive women to sell their product. Doritos chose to air this commercial during the Super Bowl because they knew that there would be a large audience, and specifically a large male audience watching. The commercial features unattractive men and attractive women. It seems that Doritos was trying to appeal to male viewers sexually, but they were really trying to get a reaction out of everybody. The men in the commercial were intentionally nerdy while the women were all intentionally attractive. It is worth paying a large amount of money to air this during the Super Bowl because many people watch the commercials as much as they watch the game. They know they are going to reach out to a large amount of people. I’m not sure the content of the advertisement says a lot about society, but the nature of the advertisement does. This advertisement was meant to be memorable. It was meant to be controversial and to get a reaction. Whether or not the reaction was positive or negative is irrelevant. They do this because they’ve got 30 seconds to make an impression. A strong impression means it’s a good ad and it means that they will get good sales.

  17. The super bowl is one of the most watched television events so it makes sense that Doritos would want to have an ad that catches people's eye. The use of sex in advertising has been shown to be a very successful advertising technique. This ad is no exception to that rule. The guys in this ad are seen as "geeky" and unattractive so when guys watch this they feel better about their chances of getting girls like the ones in this commercial. Doritos is trying to target the mid twenties male consumer base with this ad. They make it very relatable to that particular demographic.

  18. It's quite obvious the type of viewer Doritos is trying to target, males. Airing this during the Super Bowl is a great decision frankly because the audience is mostly males, often with male buddies, and all of them are in a manly mood. When in this mood males tend to think about women, and the use of attractive women in the ad really catch the viewer's attention. Sex sells, and Doritos obviously knows this since they take full advantage of it with this ad. I believe a lot of effort was put in to the casting of this ad, simply because they wanted geekier guys to make the viewers feel like even they could attract these types of women. This makes the commercial ad very relative and intriguing to the viewer.
