ReplyDeleteThe commercial plays on the fact that this small pug, who normally couldn't break down a glass door, is so enticed by Doritos that it gains the strength to break it down and get to the chips. Obviously comedy is coming into play to attract the viewers' attention of this ridiculous man trying to tease his dog. I don't think it represents men not having power, but more that Doritos is trying to convince the audience that their chips appeal to absolutely everyone, even dogs. Doritos might have thought this was a good way to get people to buy their chips by putting a memorable commercial in the audience's mind, and reminding of the broad appeal of all creatures that like Doritos.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that I do not think the commercial was necessarily trying to insinuate that men do not have power, however I think that that is an interesting point that could be looked at it. To me, it seemed that the commercial was trying to use the unexpected and the comedy to appeal to viewers and put a lasting memory in their minds for when they were walking down the chip aisle in the grocery store. The unexpectedness comes form the dog knocking the door over, because there are the windex ads in which the birds fly into the clean glass, so you would assume the dog would do the same. No one expects the dog to run through the door, trampling the man in order to get his Doritos. I also find it interesting that the commercial has the woman saying don't hurt my dog, however she is unconcerned that the man was knocked down by the door and the dog. This could be insinuating that the Dorito's are so important that it doesn't matter how the dog got them, just that the dog did and she was not concerned about how.
DeleteThe whole commercial is centered around the idea of a battle. The dog and man are battling over the Doritos chip. The commercial plays on words by having the pug play the underdog in the battle against the man. Also the commercial uses a small dog like the pug to further push the idea of the underdog in the battle. The dog ends up knocking down the door and winning the fight for the chip which suggests that Doritos chips are a prize for only the strong and worthy men. Furthermore, the fact that the man doesn't want to share the chips with the dog proposes the idea that Doritos is a desirable snack. The pug plays to an audience that loves animals and an audience that wants an underdog to win in a fight. Also, the Super Bowl is a fight between two teams which is similar to the scenario in the commercial with the dog and man fighting for the chips. Therefore, the commercial appeals to an audience that likes to watch football and fights in general.
ReplyDeleteThe door being knocked down by a smaller dog who naturally, would never be able to do such a thing, is just a funny way of showing how strong of a craving Doritos's can create. The music, humor, and slow-motion scenes are all ways to keep the audience tuned in and attentive throughout the entire commercial. The anticipation that "something is about to happen" is a very popular way to keep people watching instead of walking out of the room to do something else. The more memorable and funny a commercial is, the better you remember it and the more likely your brain will start to think about it while you are in a grocery store, for instance. I do not think that any outside/subliminal messages were intended by this commercial. It is just way for the Doritos's company to make its consumers laugh while obviously still trying to sell their product.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the producers choose a smaller breed dog because it is suppose to appear weak. When the dog comes running in towards the door it is due to the fact that the man is teasing him/her with the Doritos. The dogs want for the Doritos is strong enough that it can knock down the door and crush the boyfriend. I think Doritos incorporates comedy because it sells. People enjoy a good laugh after a long stressful day, when they see something entertaining then they may want the product as well. Overall, Doritos knows how to sell, they have been doing this for awhile. Here they incorporate the humor and cute dog to sell their product, which has worked for them in the past.
ReplyDeleteOne theme in this commercial is that if someone wants something, they will do what it takes in order to achieve the goal. The man seems to want to impress the girl, and is willing to do something mean and not too intelligent in order to impress the girl. Many people can maybe relate to such a man and probably either know someone who would try what the man did in the commercial or have tried something similar themselves. The dog does not use its size or the window as a roadblock, but uses it as a task to overcome in order to get the Doritos. A message implied is that Doritos are such a good snack that anything will be done to eat them.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the commercial tries to portray the desire of Doritos giving strength to the small dog to overpower the door. The dog uses the large size of the door to crush the man in order to get the snack. But I disagree that man is trying to impress the woman. Instead he is just teasing the dog inorder to give the commercial a comedic effect. That the man got what he deserved for teasing the small pug. The woman in the scene is almost embarrassed by the idiocy of her boyfriend, showing that the female is more intelligent than male, appealing to a female audience. The use of comedy is the theme of Super Bowl commercials and Doritos stay true to this style.
DeleteIt is evident that Doritos uses comedy as a key factor to gain the attention of the audience. The fact that such a small dog could break down a glass door is humorous. Doritos is trying to tell its audience that its chip is irresistible and even an animal can't resist its taste. Airing this commercial during the Super Bowl reinforces that chips are a snack food, that is commonly eaten during ball games, and using a humorous commercial such as this would remain in the minds of the audience. The slow motion shot builds anticipation, the audience is waiting for the pug to crash into the door, not expecting it to break it down. Comedy is key, especially during the Super Bowl and Doritos does a good job making a commercial that would appeal to everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe slow emotion effect adds to the dramatic scenes to highlight the irony of the commercial. Doritos uses the idea of the power of the "underdog." The pug is a small size dog and its ability to knock the door off of its hinges is a hyperbolic representation of its strength. Doritos used this idea to appeal to the sports audience. A lot of people like to cheer for the underdog because they like to see big upsets during games. The small dog vs. the man/the door are opponents and ironically, the small dog wins.
ReplyDeleteThe use of comedy is prevalent in many commercials throughout the SuperBowl. It is known that besides the game, the commercials are the second most entertaining. Doritos acknowledges that connection. A commercial that is entertaining to someone will stand out more to the audience than a commercial that did not establish any interest or connection between the audeince.

ReplyDeleteThere are several elements in this commercial are all used to dramatize the want for Doritos. The dog was small in stature because a normal viewer would think that the dog would jut run into the door and then bounce back, but instead the producers had the dog break down the door. This is to portray that nothing could stop that dog from getting to the Doritos, and it added an element of humor to it. The man being crushed by the dog was not a theme of men not having power, it just portrayed one man being stupid. I also don't believe that the woman in the commercial is trying to act overpowering. It only seems as thought she just seems concerned and annoyed.
ReplyDeleteDoritos incorporates comedy into their commercial because it gives a feeling of fun to Doritos, and that's what people remember when they see the product again. Commercials have changed to target their specific audience by creating a scenario where the little guy wins. People feel sympathetic towards small dogs and seeing him win makes the audience feel good. The slow add another elements of humor to the commercial.
It is obvious that the small dog cannot knock down the door, but if the dog has enough determination which means really want the Doritos chips, everything is possible. This is what the producers want to show us that if people brave enough and know what they really want, they can do anything they want. Doritos is one of the contributing factors. The whole door being knocked down by the small dog shows suggests that Doritos is one of the contributing factors to make you strong and brave. With the funny man’s words, and the dog’s ambitious, it is kind of interesting comedy for audience. This commercial reflects the similar fight with the Super Bowl. The winner always knows what they really want, which is champion.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of showing the whole door getting knocked down versus the dog running into the glass is to represent the determination the dog had to get to the Doritos. The slow motion effects of the dog running toward the door really shows the determination and fearlessness the dog encompasses as it runs directly toward the glass door, even though it probably didn't know there was a door. It also adds humor to the commercial. Humor in a commercial makes it a memorable one to the audience. The more memorable a commercial is, the more likely the audience will remember and purchase the product.
ReplyDeleteThe smaller breed of dog, combined with the music, and slow motion shots are meant to make the commercial humorous. The man acts obnoxiously as the dog is running at the door, and when he gets crushed by the door I think it represents more of a failure of men rather than men not having power. I don’t think the woman is trying to act overpowering towards the man in the commercial, I think it’s the opposite. She could have gotten up, demanded he stopped, and opened the door for the dog but she decided to just sit there and accept that her dog was going to run into the door. She was being very passive. The man is portrayed as obnoxious and child-like while the woman is portrayed as being an average person. I think the expression on the man’s face and his movements are meant to mirror the dog’s and almost puts the two characters on the same level.
ReplyDeleteI think that the producers of this commercial chose to have a small breed of dog knock down the door in this commercial because it demonstrates that Doritos are so good and that they are so good that they can motivate even the smallest customer to do what it takes to eat them. I did not get the sense that gender was being discussed in this commercial; I think the idea of an underdog winning was more prominent. I think it is significant to note the race of the two individuals and the neighborhood/house that they are in because I feel that if another race was portrayed and another (underprivileged) setting was shown that the entire commercial would have changed completely.
ReplyDeleteI think that Doritos uses humor in their commercials because I think that humor is a common ground that can be reached across all different types of personalities. I think that this commercial targets an audience of dog owners because if a person owns a dog, they would not want it to get hurt. The commercial shows a man taunting the dog and a dog owner would not usually condone this type of treatment to their pet. The commercial shows the taunting man getting over powered by the dog which would make a dog owner happy because they would want someone who was mistreating their pet to learn their lesson too. The slow motion and music enhances the idea that the dog will probably end up getting hurt from running into the door. It is also a transition where the man realizes that the dog is actually going to break through the door and the viewer can see this realization and fear in his face.
The dog is a smaller breed because the man is teasing it and expects it to hit the glass and slide down, as most of the audience did as well. This commercial is showing that the dog really wanted Doritos and that his want for the chips would overcome any obstacle in his way.As far as the gender card I do not believe gender was really touched in this commercial. They seemed to focus more on the size of the dog. People seem to have comedy stick out in their mind more than anything else. People love to laugh, and Doritos knows that. When people see something funny they tend to want to share the laugh and later will discuss a funny commercial with friends, which in turn widens their audience because it's going past television. Commercials have come a long way, they can target an audience by just incorporating anything that goes with certain age groups, by using actors their age, or gender that they want to target. Using a couple, or single people, families, or just kids in their commercial. The music and the slow motion compliment each other, because they build up the wonder in what will happen. It makes you want to watch and it makes you laugh to see such a small dog all excited and the man acting a fool, it just makes your day brighter.
ReplyDeletePersonally I believe that Doritos does a great job in advertising their commercials. They have been known to include comedy throughout a variety of their advertisements and I believe it is a very prominent technique. Advertisers use comedy because it immediately attracts the viewers attention and it appeals to multiple audiences. Men and women alike both like humor related material. Also by using comedy the viewers will relate the product to being happy during the commercial. This feeling of being happy with ultimately make the viewer think that by buying and eating Doritos they will also become happy because the commercial made them feel that way. Also another advertising technique that Doritos does a lot of is air commercials during the super bowl. There is usually one every year. This is an effective technique because even though it is more expensive, they are portraying their product to a huge audience of different sexes, ethnicities, and ages because the Super bowl is one thing that brings most Americans together.
ReplyDeleteI think the authors of the commercial decided to use a small pug because it was the girl's dog. Women are usually known to like smaller dogs since they are cuter. I also think another reason why they chose a small dog is because at the end when he finally gets to the door, he knocks the door over. This is supposed to show that the dog wanted the dorito so bad that he was able to knock that door down, no matter what size he was. This ads a bit of humor to the commercial, and I think the authors do this to try to make their viewers laugh, therefore they are more willing to buy their product, since the commercial was funny.
ReplyDeleteThe use of the smaller dog versus a larger dog is to promote comedy into the commercial. If it were a bigger dog, you would believe it more that it could knock the door over, but since it's a smaller dog, it's more surprising and shocking, making the viewer laugh. Doritos commercials are usually the funnier commercials on television. They believe laughter is the key to promotion and they build their commercials on that. It was crucial to have this in a Super Bowl commercial, since commercials get the most viewers during half-time. It's also important to have it during half-time because comedy is a very important part of Super Bowl commercials, it's a fight to see who can have the funniest commercials.
